Treating Xerostomia with Mucoadhesive Pilocarpine Tablets

7-26-21_GenDenThough pilocarpine is indicated for the treatment of xerostomia, the systemic use of this drug may promote adverse reactions — exacerbated sweating, increased urinary frequency, tiredness, headache, dizziness, nausea — that make it unviable. Topical, controlled-release formulations of pilocarpine for use on the oral mucosa, however, may be an effective alternative.
