Description

This course will provide the general dentists with information regarding oral cancer. Potentially malignant conditions, particularly leukoplakia, will be discussed. Prevention of the disease is primarily the job of oral health care professionals; therefore, a focus will be made on preventing oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Learning Objectives

Discuss the etiology of potentially malignant oral conditions of the cavity.
Recognize how potentially malignant conditions present in the oral cavity.
Determine an appropriate treatment plan when potentially malignant conditions are discovered.

Speaker bio

Ashley Clark, DDS, FACD, is an associate professor in the Division of Oral Pathology at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. She earned a DDS from Indiana University and a certificate in oral and maxillofacial pathology from the University of Florida. Clark previously worked at West Virginia University (WVU) and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry. At WVU, she was the oral pathology laboratory director and was nominated for the Early Career Innovator Award. At UTHealth, she earned the John H. Freeman Award for Faculty Teaching and the Dean’s Excellence Award in the Scholarship of Teaching. Clark has published over 40 papers and abstracts and authored the oral pathology sections of the 2014 editions of both “Dental Decks” and “Dental Hygiene Decks.” She is a fellow in the American College of Dentists, serves on the Commission on Dental Accreditation review board for oral and maxillofacial pathology programs and is on the advisory board for Oral Cancer Cause.
