On Tuesday, the Organized Dentistry Coalition sent a letter to House Education and Labor Committee Chair Bobby Scott (D-VA) and Ranking Member Virginia Foxx (R-NC), urging the Committee to advance several student loan reform bills and encouraging members on the Committee to cosponsor other student reform legislation pending before the Ways and Means and Energy and Commerce Committees. AGD and 10 other dental organizations signed onto the letter spearheaded by the American Dental Association (ADA).

The letter encourages the Education and Labor Committee to advance the POST GRAD Act (H.R.4631), the REDI Act (H.R.4122/S.3658), the Student Loan Refinancing Act (H.R.2160), and the Student Loan Refinancing and Recalculation Act (H.R.1918). Members of the Committee were encouraged to cosponsor the Student Loan Interest Deduction Act (H.R.4726), the Indian Health Service Health Professions Tax Fairness Act (H.R.7539/S.2874), the Dental Loan Repayment Assistance Act (H.R.1285/S.449), and the HELP Act (H.R.2295).

Impact on General Dentistry: Increasingly high costs for graduate-level education requires many dental students to take out expensive loans that limit their access to future employment and specialization. In 2021, the average indebted dental graduate owed $301,583 in loans. The AGD supports legislative efforts to provide greater economic relief to a generation of medical students facing disproportionately high costs for education.
