On August 11, AGD and the AGD Foundation sent a letter in support of H.R.1550, the
Promoting Resources to Expand Vaccination, Education and New Treatments for
(PREVENT) HPV Cancers Act of 2021
, to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). The letter called for the PREVENT HPV Cancers Act to be considered on the House floor for a vote and urged the House leaders to encourage their caucuses to support the bill’s passage unanimously.

H.R.1550 is bipartisan legislation that would increase funding at the National Cancer Institute to focus research on HPV-associated cancers. The bill’s provisions would help promote public awareness of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines, which can prevent HPV and cancers associated with HPV.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee passed the bill in late July.

Impact on General Dentistry: AGD strongly supports this legislation is advocating for its passage because general dentists are the first line of defense against oral cancer. The disease can be detected in its early stages during routine dental visits. AGD’s philanthropic arm, the AGD Foundation, focuses on oral cancer awareness, risk factor prevention, and diagnostic training for general dentists. The Foundation recently sent a letter to bill’s sponsors thanking them for introducing the proposal. The organization aims to improve the oral health of the public and support the efforts of the general dentist and AGD.
