Dental Materials Effects of mixing technique on bubble formation in alginate impression material

    Thomas F. McDaniel, DMD, FAGD
Robert T. Kramer, DMD, FACD, FICD
    Francis Im, BS, MA
    Dallin Snow, BS, MS

    2013 Sep/Oct; 61(6):35.

The aim of this study was twofold: determine whether bubble formation in alginate is influenced by the sequence of water/powder addition prior to mixing, and to compare 4 different spatulation techniques. Porosity was significantly less for powder-first trials using manual spatulation (P < 0.05) but the sequence made no difference with the other techniques (= 0.714). Surface porosity was significantly less for centrifugal and vacuum mixing compared to manual spatulation, while internal porosity was significantly less for centrifugal mixing compared to all the other techniques (P < 0.05).

Gilberto Muller Arcari, DDS, MS, PhD
Sylvio Monteiro Jr., DDS, MS, PhD

    2013 Sep/Oct; 61(6):46.

This study sought to measure the microtensile bond strength of a nanofilled composite resin to human dentin after phosphoric acid etching followed by nonvital bleaching. Twenty extracted human maxillary premolars were prepared and assigned randomly to 4 groups (n = 5): Group 1 (control) – unbleached with no previous acid etching, Group 2 – bleached only, Group 3 – acid-etched for 15 seconds prior to bleaching, and Group 4 – acid-etched for 30 seconds prior to bleaching. There were no statistically significant differences of bond strength values among Groups 1-3; however, the mean values of Group 4 were statistically lower compared with the other groups.

It is important for every dentist to be aware of the maxillofacial manifestations of multiple myeloma (MM), especially with regard to early diagnosis, since injury can occur when MM is in its primary form in the maxillary bones. This case report presents a 58-year old man with mandibular swelling; his medical history indicated he had a fracture of the humerus a month earlier. The patient underwent chemotherapy for the MM, and a hemimandibulectomy was followed by the installation of a reconstructive plate for the fractured jaw.

    Kurtis G. Kobes, DDS
    Kraig S. Vandewalle, DDS, MS

    2013 Sep/Oct; 61(6):73.

This study compared the shear-bond strength of  3 resin cements (Multilink Automix, RelyX Unicem, and Panavia F 2.00) to zirconia conditioned with 4 ceramic primers (Z-Prime Plus, MonoBond Plus, CLEARFIL CERAMIC PRIMER, AZ Primer) or no primer. The shear-bond strength of the resin cements to zirconia varied based on the type of primer. Z-Prime Plus provided the highest shear bond strength to zirconia, and was significantly greater than the control with all 3 resin cements.

  • Anesthesia and Pain Control The absolute contraindication for using nitrous oxide with intraocular gases and other dental considerations associated with vitreoretinal surgery

    Andrew Tanchyk, DMD
    Amy Tanchyk, DMD, MD

    2013 Sep/Oct; 61(6):e6.

This case report identifies a side effect of vitreoretinal surgery with a benign outcome—specifically, a referred pain or pressure from left eye surgery or an associated gas bubble to the upper left quadrant. Such cases underscore the need for a dentist and staff to inquire about all ocular procedures to avoid catastrophic patient vision loss due to nitrous oxide, which is absolutely contraindicated after vitreoretinal surgery that uses intraocular gas. Dentists should communicate with the patient’s opthalmologist before proceeding with any dental procedure.
