General Dentistry’s Advisory Board serve as subject-matter experts for the journal’s Editorial Team. They are our sounding board and our resource for up-and-coming trends in their respective fields. Michael B. Miller, DDS, FAGD, FAACD, is President of Reality Publishing Company, a leading online, non-commercial product evaluation research service. He is a member of the American Association of Dental Research/International Association of Dental Research and has lectured nationally and internationally on dental products, materials, and equipment, as well as esthetics and sports dentistry. He is a charter member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and wrote the initial version of its accreditation program. He has practiced general dentistry in Houston, Texas, for 42 years and is also a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston.
Larry Williams, DDS, ABGD, MAGD, is a retired Captain in the US Navy Dental Corps, where he was the Public Health Emergency Officer for the 16 states of the Navy Region Midwest and for the Naval Health Clinic. He also served as the co-chair of the Navy’s Tobacco Cessation Action Team and as a member of the Department of Defense Alcohol and Tobacco Advisory Council. Dr Williams is now an Associate Professor at Midwestern University, College of Dental Medicine-Illinois, Downers Grove.
Wynn H. Okuda, DMD, is Past National President (2002-2003) and a board-accredited member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He also is on the Advisory Board of The Best Dentists in America and on the Executive Council of the International Federation of Esthetic Dentistry. He practices cosmetic, implant, and restorative dentistry at the Dental Day Spa of Hawaii in Honolulu.
Gerald N. Glickman, MS, DDS, MBA, JD, is Professor of Endodontics at Texas A&M College of Dentistry in Dallas. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics (ABE) and a Past President of both the ABE and the American Association of Endodontists. He is also a Past President of the American Dental Education Association and a founding member of the Commission for Change and Innovation in Dental Education. He maintains a part-time practice limited to endodontics in Dallas, Texas.
Eric Zane Shapira, DDS, MAGD, MA, MHA, teaches geriatric medicine, nursing, and dentistry in the United States and in several hospitals in mainland China. In 2012, he was awarded The Friendship Award for his humanitarian service throughout China. Dr Shapira practiced comprehensive and cosmetic dentistry in Half Moon Bay, California, for over 35 years and continues to practice part time in the San Francisco Bay area.
Ahmad Kutkut, DDS, MS, DICOI, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Oral Health Practice, Division of Prosthodontics, and the Director of the Predoctoral Implant Program at the University of Kentucky, College of Dentistry. Dr. Kutkut has a master’s degree and a certificate in prosthodontics and has completed two-year certificate programs in both implant dentistry and advanced education in general dentistry. Dr. Kutkut, an active member of the American Dental Education Association, American College of Prosthodontists, and International Congress of Oral Implantologists, is among the few clinicians worldwide who are trained in both the surgical and restorative disciplines of implant dentistry. In addition to lecturing internationally, he has published numerous articles and serves as a peer reviewer for several professional journals. Dr. Kutkut maintains a practice limited to implants, maxillofacial prosthetics, and prosthodontics.
Duane R. Schafer, DDS, MS, is a Professor in the Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. Previously, he was Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Director of its graduate program at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Dr. Schafer maintains a practice in oral and maxillofacial pathology in Richmond, Virginia.
Dale A. Miles, BA, DDS, MS, FRCD(C), maintains a full-time practice in oral and maxillofacial radiology in Fountain Hills, Arizona. Previously, he was Chair of the Department of Oral Health Sciences at the University of Kentucky, Director of the graduate program in Dental Diagnostic Sciences at Indiana University, and the first Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at A.T. Still University in Mesa, Arizona. He is a Diplomate of both the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and the American Board of Oral Medicine. Dr. Miles has also consulted for several radiology companies.
Vejay K. Ravindran DDS, MS, graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry in 2009 and was immediately commissioned as an active duty dental officer in the US Army. Dr. Ravindran earned his master’s degree after completion of the Army’s two-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program and served as adjunct faculty for the AEGD residency. He has lectured nationally and at the local level. Dr. Ravindran is now in private practice and provides contract dental services for local hospitals, working with oncologists, transplant teams, and cardiologists. To date, he has completed more than 500 multidisciplinary hospital dental cases.
Richard H. Nagelberg, DDS, is a general dentist in suburban Philadelphia. He has international practice experience, having worked in Thailand, Cambodia, and Newfoundland, Canada. He has served on many advisory boards and as a consultant to a variety of companies and organizations. In addition to being a full-time clinician, he is Director of Medical Affairs, Valeant Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Dr. Nagelberg writes a bimonthly column for Dental Economics magazine and has provided over 350 continuing education presentations over the past 14 years.
Yosh Jefferson, DMD, FAGD, is Past President of the International Association for Orthodontics, a Fellow of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, and a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. He maintains a general dental practice in Mount Holly, New Jersey.
Wesley Shankland, II, BS, DDS, MS, FAGD, attended Ohio State University where he received his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees. He earned his Fellowship of the Academy of General Dentistry in 1985 and has maintained a practice limited to the diagnosis and treatment of orofacial pain, temporomandibular disorders, and sleep disorders since 1983. In 1989, he earned a master’s degree in human anatomy from Ohio State University. In addition to lecturing internationally, Dr. Shankland has written more than 100 scientific articles, several textbook chapters, and four books and was the editor of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain’s Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Craniofacial Pain. Dr. Shankland is a Past President of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, former Assistant Editor of the Journal of Craniomandibular Practice, and he currently sits on the editorial boards of 12 scientific journals.
Samuel B. Low, DDS, MS, MEd, is Professor Emeritus, University of Florida, College of Dentistry, and an associate faculty member of The Pankey Institute, with 30 years of private practice experience in periodontics, lasers, and implant placement. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and Past President of the American Academy of Periodontology. He was named Dentist of the Year by the Florida Dental Association, was designated as a Distinguished Alumnus by the University of Texas Dental School, and is a recipient of the Gordon Christensen Lecturer Recognition Award. He is a Past President of the Florida Dental Association and a Past Trustee of the American Dental Association.
Thomas Viola, RPh, CCP, founder of the lecture and continuing education program Pharmacology Declassified, is a board-certified pharmacist, clinical educator, professional speaker, and published author. Dr Viola is a faculty member of 14 dental professional degree programs and has presented more than 1,000 continuing education courses to dental professionals, nationally and internationally, in the areas of oral pharmacology and local anesthesia. Through his informative, humorous, and engaging live seminars and webinars, Dr Viola has earned a reputation for making pharmacology accessible to all members of the dental team.
Mario D. Ramos, DDS, MS, FICD, is a tenured Associate Professor at Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine-Illinois where he has been a faculty member since 2015. He earned his dental degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru. Subsequently, he obtained a fellowship in prosthodontics and implants from University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Ramos completed his master’s and postgraduate studies in operative dentistry at University of North Carolina. Before arriving to Midwestern University, Dr. Ramos taught at the College of Dental Medicine at Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Ramos’ research interests are dental materials and dental implants. In addition, he is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honorary Society.
