AGD Fellowship Exam Information

To register for the AGD Fellowship Exam, download the FAGD Exam Application, and send it, along with your payment, to AGD. You can choose to take the exam in one of three ways:

1. At the AGD Scientific Session. The exam will be in a paper-and-pencil format. You can register separately for the exam by downloading the registration form and sending it to AGD. You may also register on-site up to and including the morning of the exam.
2. During the Fall Fellowship Review Course. The exam will be in a paper-and-pencil format. You register to sit for the exam immediately following the review course, which is given annually at various locations.
3. At an SMT testing center. Take a computerized version of the exam, offered year-round at SMT testing centers throughout the United States. Complete the exam application at least two weeks in advance of the date on which you plan to take the exam. Once you have submitted your application and fee to AGD, SMT will send you an email containing your user ID and password, which you will need to schedule a testing appointment.

Note: During the months of October, November and December, exam seats typically fill up quickly. Schedule your appointment at least three weeks in advance of the date on which you plan to take the exam.

The AGD offers several means to help members prepare for the exam, such as take the Fellowship Review Course. 

AGD also offers an online study guide, which includes 100 multiple-choice questions and allows you to view your results instantly, as well as the answer key. Complete the practice test to earn 15 hours of CE credit. For more information, read “How to Use This Guide.”

Another study preparation aid is the study guide supplement - a great way to help you prepare. The second edition is now available. It consists of 300+ questions, answers, critiques & references from the 2016-2020 study guides. Member can receive a $100 discount by attending a national review course and submitting attendance documentation. 

In 2024, a job task analysis (JTA) was carried out in conjunction with the AGD Fellowship Exam program. A job task analysis is a process that aims to describe the physical actions and cognitive activities involved with or required to complete a task. By conducting a JTA with the exam program, this helps to ensure that the Fellowship Exam is on track with the current practices and procedures in all fields of dentistry today.

As a result of the JTA, revision have been made to the blueprint of the 2025 Fellowship Exam, study materials, and content outline regarding question count per discipline and updated subcategories per discipline. Members who wish to have their exam results rescored:

• Are limited to the most recent two-year testing time-period. Exams taken beyond this period are not eligible for a rescore.
• Must submit written notification requesting a rescore of their exam results. Written notification can be sent to Education@agd.org. 
• Submit payment of $100 to process each rescore request. Click the PayPal button below to process your payment. 
• Notification of rescoring results will be processed within 30 days of request and payment.
• Members will be sent written notification regarding the results of the rescore.
• No results will be given by phone, fax, or email per exam policy.

 If you’re taking the paper-and-pencil version of the exam and need special accommodations:

• Submit a letter to AGD requesting special accommodations at least 60 days before the exam registration deadline.
• Provide documentation from a qualified professional (for example, your physician, psychologist or counselor) who is currently treating you, verifying your condition and the specific assistance you’ll require.

AGD reserves the right to authorize the use of auxiliary aids or modifications in such a way as to maintain the integrity and security of the examination process. 

The exam is a norm-referenced exam, meaning that the passing score is based on what AGD’s Examination Council considers to be the minimum knowledge a general dentist must have to be considered proficient.
