Tooth fragment reattachment was performed for a total of 5 fractured teeth in 4 children aged 8 to 11 years. After a follow-up of 9 months to 4 years, the perceived clinical changes were minor. Four teeth were vital, and 1 tooth had a periapical lesion requiring endodontic treatment. Results of the Oral Health Impact Profile-Aesthetic questionnaire revealed an improvement in the oral health–related quality of life.

This case report describes the treatment of a 75-year-old woman who presented with severe oral lichenoid hypersensitivity reactions secondary to an undiagnosed underlying thymoma. No substantial improvement of the oral conditions was achieved with conventional therapies; however, almost complete resolution of the lesions was achieved following completion of radiation therapy for the thymic mass.

This article reexamines the etiopathogenesis of sialolithiasis based on the interpretation of data reported in the literature and the interpretation of scanning electron microscopic, histopathologic, fluorescence, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopic studies of a giant sialolith from a single patient. The authors propose that the triple synergism of microbiota, biofilm, and salivary dynamics plays a fundamental role in the development and intrinsic architecture of sialoliths.

Basic Science Microshear bond strength of resin luting agents to monolithic zirconia

    Charles Janus
    Peter C. Moon

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different surface treatments on the microshear bond strength of resin cements to zirconia. Three different resin luting agents were bonded to zirconia blocks pretreated with alumina abrasion (control), tribochemical silicoating, or 1 of 2 adhesive primers. The results suggest that the effects of different surface treatments may be specific for each cement.

A retrospective study identified and categorized incidental findings on 474 limited field of view (LFOV) cone beam computed tomographic (CBCT) scans. At least 1 incidental finding was detected on 51.5% of scans, and 70.5% of the findings were recommended for referral or additional treatment, indicating that the use of a CBCT system with an LFOV does not diminish the need to conduct a thorough evaluation of the images.

    Shalizeh A. Patel
    Michael B. Miller

This case report describes the use of an erbium, chromium-doped: yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser to remove a 3-unit fixed partial denture that required pontic repair. The successful procedure shows that atraumatic debonding of a high-strength ceramic can be predictably performed with the Er,Cr:YSGG laser when appropriate settings are used.

An in vitro study assessed the thermal effect of irradiation on the setting time of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) cements. The MTA specimens were light cured for 20, 40, or 60 seconds, while the CEM specimens were cured for 60, 90, or 120 seconds. Control specimens of each material underwent no irradiation, but all experimental and control groups had 60 seconds of rest time. The findings showed that light curing can significantly decrease the setting time for MTA and CEM cements.

This article describes a procedure for restoring teeth with a custom 1-piece glass fiber–reinforced post and core fabricated using computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing. Because of better adaptation, this endodontic post enables use of a thinner and homogenous cement layer; in addition, it eliminates the need to construct a composite resin core build-up.
