On July 15, the House Energy and Commerce Committee held a legislative markup session to approve several pending bills, including H.R.3935, the Protecting Patients Transportation to Care Act. The legislation may now go on the full House of Representatives for consideration.

H.R.3935 is bipartisan legislation that would codify the non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) benefit requirement in the Medicaid statute and was introduced by Rep. Tony Cárdenas (D-CA) and Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA). Medicaid’s NEMT benefit provides rides for patients to see their health providers if they are not able to access other travel options. Companion legislation (S.2846) is pending in the Senate.

Impact on General Dentistry: AGD supports efforts to preserve the NEMT benefit, such as the Protecting Patients Transportation to Care Act, as it can be a crucial factor in getting children in to see the dentists and access oral health care services under Medicaid.
