On April 3, 2026, the Trump Administration released its fiscal year (FY) 2027 Budget Proposal. Overall, the HHS Budget-in-Brief proposes $111.1 billion in discretionary budget authority for FY 2027, a decrease of $15.8 billion or 12.5 percent. According to HHS, the FY 2027 Budget illustrates HHS’s commitment to the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) agenda through investments to battle chronic disease and support advancements in health. It includes proposals to: fight the chronic disease epidemic; strengthen services to tribes; maintain America’s competitive advantage; restore national preparedness capabilities; and modernize infrastructure and operations.

Within the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the budget proposes a $35 million reduction in funding for the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, down to $490 million.

The budget includes $130 million in discretionary funding for the National Health Service Corps, which will support approximately 1,300 new loan repayment awards for primary medical care, dental, and behavioral health clinicians in exchange for service in the health professional shortage areas of greatest need.

The budget also requests $50 million for the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), a $19 million decrease from FY 2026 enacted funding level. ONC leads the federal government in health IT efforts by supporting the development of standards and advancing policies that ensure access to electronic healthcare data for all patients.

Impact on General Dentistry: AGD continues to support and advocate for workforce development programs critical to dentistry. AGD will monitor the federal appropriations process and advocate against reductions in funding for dental research.
