“Seeing colleagues and mentors come together to promote dentistry for the benefit of peers and patients truly inspired me.”

A self-described introvert, Maritza Flores, DDS, FAGD, FICD, credits her involvement in organized dentistry, particularly through the San Antonio AGD’s San Antonio Fellowship Exchange (SAFE) program, with helping her grow into a confident clinician and leader.

“SAFE and the San Antonio AGD board have largely shaped me into the leader I am today,” she said. “Seeing colleagues and mentors come together to promote dentistry for the benefit of peers and patients has truly inspired me.”

Now a Fellow of both AGD and the International College of Dentists, Flores is currently pursuing her AGD Mastership while balancing private practice, public health dentistry and teaching as adjunct faculty at the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry.

Her dual experience in public and private sectors allows her to bridge gaps in access and understanding for patients — and that’s one of the reasons why fellow San Antonio AGD board member Akshay Thusu, DDS, MAGD, FICD, FPFA, nominated her to this year’s 10 Dentists to Watch list.

“Her professional versatility underscores her adaptability and patient-centered focus,” Thusu said. “Dr. Flores is a remarkable dentist and leader.”

Through her volunteer work with Smiles of Hope, Sirviendo a Nuestros Heroes, San Antonio Christian Dental Clinic and the Texas Mission of Mercy, Flores continues to make tangible impacts on her community. Her dedication to community outreach and public service is rooted in her own journey.

“My passion for public health dentistry is due to my disadvantaged background,” she said. “Working with free dental programs is a means of health equity. It’s an opportunity for people to obtain a higher level of health regardless of circumstance.”

As a leader in organized dentistry and faculty member, Flores embraces being a role model for the next generation of dentists. Her advice for them is simple.

“Everybody’s journey is unique,” Flores said. “Find what brings you joy, do not compare yourself to others, and invest in yourself.”
