“Being able to take patients who have been struggling with their teeth for years and change their lives in one appointment has been an incredible and emotional experience, both for the patients and myself.”

Few young dentists bridge the worlds of clinical innovation and military leadership quite like Maj. Jake Schisler, DMD, DC, MiARNG. As commander of the Michigan Army National Guard Medical Detachment and a thriving private practice owner, Schisler has proven that strong leadership and intentional teamwork can elevate both care delivery and business success.
In just two years, his practice’s production grew 2.5 times — a testament, he said, to his outstanding team.
“The biggest factor that contributed to our growth was making sure we had the right team in place,” Schisler said. “The trust that comes from fostering those relationships creates a desire in everyone to work harder together to achieve our goals.”
That same commitment to people-centered leadership defines his military career. After joining the U.S. Army Dental Corps at 26, Schisler found himself advising commanders on the dental readiness of 5,000 soldiers.
“Being pushed out of my comfort zone forced me to hone my leadership skills and communicate effectively with people who had no dental background,” he said. “It taught me confidence, clarity and how to break down complex situations so others can understand.”
Clinically, Schisler’s passion lies in full-arch implant dentistry. His ability to have an immediate positive impact on his patients’ self-esteem never gets old.
“Being able to take patients who have been struggling with their teeth for years and change their lives in one appointment has been an incredible and emotional experience, both for the patients and myself,” he said.
Looking ahead, Schisler is excited about how artificial intelligence and digital workflows will reshape implant dentistry. But whether leading a team of soldiers or guiding patients toward healthier smiles, his philosophy remains the same: Invest in people, keep learning and lead with integrity.
