AGD Impact Wins International College of Dentists Humanitarian Service Article Award for a Second Time
The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) was recently recognized by the International College of Dentists (IDC) with the Humanitarian Service Article Award for five-part series published in AGD Impact, its flagship news and information magazine. This marks the second win in this category for AGD Impact.
The five-part series, published in the February 2025 issue of AGD Impact, wove together practical guidance and firsthand accounts from dentists who volunteered their skills abroad, from the Peruvian jungle to the islands of Fiji. The ICD selected the series for its ability to both inform and inspire dentists considering humanitarian service of their own.
"This award reflects everything AGD Impact strives to be for our members: a source of real, honest storytelling that also equips dentists with the tools to make a difference," said Timothy Kosinsky, DDS, MAGD, AGD Editor. "There’s a particular kind of pride that comes from watching a story move people to act and that is exactly what happened with this story. I'm incredibly proud of our editorial and design teams, and of the volunteer dentists who trusted us with their stories."
The award-winning series included:
- "Serving the Underserved As an International Volunteer Dentist" (Introduction) by Jake Kathleen Marcus, JD, PGDip
- "Could Dentistry in the Peruvian Jungle Be on Your Bucket List?" by Michael L. Johnson, DDS
- "A Dental Mission Trip to Vanua Levu, Fiji: Providing Life-Changing Care and Building Connections" by Nicole Smith, DDS, FAGD
- "Providing Critical Care and Support to Honduras Through Medical Brigades" by Michael V. Unti, DDS, FAGD, FADI, FAES
- "Volunteering in Central America and Cambodia: For the Big-Hearted, Not the Faint of Heart" by Carl D. Werts, DDS, FAGD
The award will be presented at the ICD/American Association of Dental Editors & Journalists (AADEJ) Journalism Awards Ceremony on Friday, October 2.
AGD Impact is AGD’s award-winning member magazine, delivering news, insights, and information on clinical practice, advocacy, education, and issues shaping general dentistry. Published for more than 50 years, it is a valued benefit of AGD membership and is also available by subscription.
