The June AGD Impact Issue Highlights Regenerative Dentistry
The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) announces the release of the June 2025 issue of AGD Impact, featuring a compelling cover story on regenerative dentistry, one of the most promising frontiers in oral health care.
The cover story, “Regenerative Dentistry: Current Research and Upcoming Advances,” explores how regenerative dentistry is transforming the treatment of oral diseases and injuries through biologically driven solutions. Highlighting breakthroughs in stem cell applications, tissue engineering and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), the article outlines how general dentists may soon help patients regrow tooth structure, soft tissue and even bones, moving beyond traditional repair to real restoration.
J. Karl Schumacher, DDS, is featured in the article for his work incorporating PRF into routine procedures, including extractions and implant surgeries. Experts interviewed in the piece underscore the importance of patient education and clinical training to integrate regenerative therapies into general practice successfully. The article also details regulatory and reimbursement considerations that may shape broader adoption in the years ahead.
Other highlights of the June issue include:
Policy Update: Understanding Licensure Compacts
The issue also includes a timely overview of the two interstate dentist and dental hygienist compacts currently moving through the legislative process in several states. The article breaks down what general dentists need to know about licensure portability, eligibility and potential changes in practice jurisdiction.
Financial Management: Avoiding Risky Tax Shelters
This month’s Financial Management column urges dentists to steer clear of abusive tax shelters that could trigger IRS scrutiny. The article outlines four typical schemes targeting dental professionals — syndicated conservation easements, micro-captive insurance companies, inflated research and development tax credits, and abusive trust arrangements. While each is often marketed as legal and beneficial, the IRS classifies them as high-risk. Dentists are encouraged to pursue legitimate deductions and consult trusted tax professionals to remain compliant and avoid costly audits.
Ethics: The Role of Practice-Based Research in Advancing Community Standards
This month’s Ethics column explores the historical and ethical evolution of practice-based dental research. Highlighting the growth of practice-based research networks (PBRNs), the article underscores how general dentists can contribute directly to evidence-based standards. It also outlines the additional ethical obligations for those participating in clinical research, including informed consent, risk-benefit analysis and independent review.
Member Spotlight: Geng Tian, DMD, FAGD
Originally from Jinan, China, Dr. Geng Tian practices in South Carolina and serves on AGD’s Dental Practice Council. He is leading efforts to support dentists practicing on H-1B visas by advocating for clearer pathways to legal status and greater awareness within the dental community. Through his leadership, AGD is working to ease regulatory barriers and promote inclusion for international dental professionals.
