Academy of General Dentistry Responds to Texas Attorney General’s Attack on Fluoride Use in Dental Products
The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is expressing concern over the recent statements and investigations made by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton regarding the marketing of fluoride-containing dental products to children.
AGD, an organization representing 40,000 general dentists, understands the importance of ensuring the safety and efficacy of dental products, especially those intended for children. Fluoride has been a cornerstone in the prevention of dental caries for decades. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recognized community water fluoridation as one of the ten outstanding public health achievements of the 20th century, citing its role in reducing tooth decay by approximately 25% in children and adults.
“Efforts to inform consumers through clear labeling and guidance should remain the focus, not fear-based campaigns that could reverse hard-earned public health gains,” said AGD President-Elect Marc J. Worob, DDS, FAGD, a general dentist practicing in Austin, Texas. “As a dental professional and a Texan, I urge policymakers to consider the overwhelming body of evidence supporting the appropriate use of fluoride. We must not lose sight of the decades of progress we’ve made in preventing tooth decay through safe, regulated fluoride exposure.”
While it's crucial to monitor and regulate fluoride exposure, Dr. Worob stresses that it is equally important to consider the substantial benefits that appropriate fluoride use provides. Since the 1930s, the addition of low levels of fluoride to community water has remineralized tooth enamel and reversed early tooth decay. AGD, the American Dental Association, and other health organizations continue to support the use of fluoride in both community water systems and dental products, emphasizing its safety and effectiveness when used as directed.
We advocate for a balanced approach that ensures public safety without compromising the oral health benefits that fluoride offers. Education on proper usage, especially for children's dental products, is paramount. Clear labeling and guidance can help prevent overexposure while maintaining the protective benefits against tooth decay.
The AGD is committed to collaborating with regulatory bodies, healthcare professionals, and communities to promote informed decisions that safeguard both public health and individual well-being.
