Serving as a Student Delegate at the 2025 AGD House of Delegates was one of the most impactful and formative experiences of my dental school career. The meeting offered an in-depth look into how the Academy of General Dentistry functions as a national organization committed to advocacy education and the long-term success of general dentists. Through structured sessions, reference committee hearings, and formal debate, I gained a strong foundation in parliamentary procedure and a clear understanding of how AGD thoughtfully shapes policy and direction for the profession.
Representing dental students on a national level was both an honor and a responsibility. As a student delegate, I was entrusted with advocating not only for my peers at my own institution but for students across the country. What stood out most was the respect and inclusivity shown by AGD leadership and seasoned dentists. Student delegates were welcomed into meaningful conversations, encouraged to voice their perspectives, and treated as valued contributors reinforcing AGDs commitment to mentorship and the future of general dentistry.
Equally valuable were the connections formed throughout the meeting. AGD fosters a uniquely supportive environment where dentists at every stage of their careers are genuinely invested in helping one another succeed. Seasoned dentists were eager to offer guidance, mentorship, and personal advice going beyond formal programming to support students and new dentists. Through these interactions, I was even able to connect with a prospective employer for next year, an experience that underscored how powerful AGD’s network can be. These relationships and the willingness of members to support one another are truly the driving force of our profession, especially early in one's career.
The opportunity to actively participate in discussions and contribute to decisions that influence the future of general dentistry affirmed my desire to remain involved with AGD as I transition into practice. For students considering applying, I strongly encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity. Come prepared, engage fully, and be open to learning about AGD as it offers not only a seat at the table, but a community that supports growth, leadership, and lifelong involvement in dentistry.
For dental students, this experience provides clarity, confidence, and connection at a pivotal stage in your career. Speaking from personal experience, getting involved with AGD early opens doors to mentorship, advocacy, and opportunities that extend far beyond dental school.
