NADCRC Convenes to Discuss Budget, Research Advances, and Future of Dental Science

  • by AGD Washington Advocacy Representative
  • Jun 11, 2025
On May 28, 2025, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) held the 239th Meeting of the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council (NADCRC). The meeting covered updates on NIH and NIDCR funding, agency reorganization plans, Congressional outreach efforts, and ongoing changes to NIH grant processes. Council members also heard presentations on cutting-edge research in salivary gland biology, including therapeutic approaches for xerostomia and Sjögren’s disease. NIDCR leadership reported that while FY 2025 funding remains level, the President’s FY 2026 budget proposes a significant cut to NIH funding and a merger of NIDCR with other institutes. Council members raised concerns about the impact of the 21% reduction in NIDCR’s internal workforce and delays in grant awards due to new review procedures. NIDCR also highlighted its ongoing Congressional outreach, including a June 6 presentation to raise awareness during National Oral Health Month.

Impact on General Dentistry: As NIDCR navigates funding shifts and organizational changes, the outcomes of these decisions will shape the future of dental research, education, and clinical practice. Sustained investment in oral health research drives the innovations, clinical guidelines, and educational resources that shape the future of dental care.
