Senate HELP Committee to Vote on CDC Nominee Susan Monarez

  • by AGD Washington Advocacy Representative
  • Jul 9, 2025
On July 9, 2025, the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee is scheduled to vote on the nomination of Dr. Susan Monarez to serve as Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dr. Monarez, a microbiologist and former deputy director at the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), testified before the HELP Committee on June 25, during which she emphasized the importance of science-based decision-making and public trust in the CDC. When asked about the safety and effectiveness of fluoride, Dr. Monarez stated that “fluoride is an important component to oral health.”

A recording of the hearing can be found here.

Impact on General Dentistry: Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has proposed removing fluoride from public drinking water, recently acknowledged that the policy may result in more cavities. While the CDC Director does not directly govern dental practice, Dr. Monarez’s confirmation could influence broader public health initiatives, including public health guidance and disease prevention strategies that intersect with oral health.
