MAHA Commission Releases Preliminary Report

  • by AGD Washington Advocacy Representative
  • May 28, 2025
On May 22, 2025, the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Commission, established by the Trump Administration, released a preliminary report assessing the causes of childhood chronic disease. The report identifies four primary factors: poor diet and ultra-processed foods; environmental chemicals; lack of physical activity and chronic stress; and overmedicalization. The report lists fluoride alongside microplastics and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) as chemicals that may impact children's health, citing research suggesting a correlation between fluoride exposure and lower IQ levels among children. The Commission also highlights the EPA’s ongoing review for potential updates to federal drinking water standards.

Impact on General Dentistry: If the FDA moves forward with its ban, the lack of available fluoride supplements may significantly impact dental health efforts in rural and non-fluoridated regions. Access to fluoride remains a critical factor in preventing tooth decay, and limiting its availability may lead to increased oral health disparities. AGD remains committed to supporting the well-established scientific evidence confirming water fluoridation’s safety and effectiveness.
