Orofacial Pain: An Issue Beyond Occlusion
Date(s)Abby Schmidt, DDS, MS
Subject: 200 Orofacial Pain
Credits: 1.5
Thursday, Sept. 8: 7:30–9 p.m. CDT
Audience: Dentists
Fee: $125 (nonmembers); $75 (members); $37.50 (students)
Description
Dentists are experts at treating conditions in the teeth and oral cavity. While these conditions may or may not present with pain, they are often resolved with mechanical dental treatments. Orofacial pain conditions, including temporomandibular joint disorders, very rarely have odontogenic etiologies. This presentation will review the concepts of orofacial pain and why dental occlusion is infrequently involved in pain onset and perpetuation. This presentation will run for one hour and be followed by a 30-minute Q&A.
Learning Objectives
- Define orofacial pain and review its place in dentistry.
- Discuss the limited role of occlusion in orofacial pain conditions.
- Review alternative mechanisms underlying orofacial pain conditions.
Abby Schmidt, DDS, MS, attended the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Upon graduation, she commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy, serving as a general dentist. Continuing in naval service, she completed a three-year orofacial pain residency program at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, Maryland. She earned her master’s degree from the Uniformed Services University and was awarded first place for her research on the use of oral appliances in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea by the American Association of Dental Research. Schmidt recently separated from the Navy and will continue her career as an orofacial pain specialist in private practice.
