Abby Schmidt, DDS, MS
Subject: 200 Orofacial Pain
Credits: 1.5
Thursday, Sept. 8: 7:30–9 p.m. CDT

Description

Dentists are experts at treating conditions in the teeth and oral cavity. While these conditions may or may not present with pain, they are often resolved with mechanical dental treatments. Orofacial pain conditions, including temporomandibular joint disorders, very rarely have odontogenic etiologies. This presentation will review the concepts of orofacial pain and why dental occlusion is infrequently involved in pain onset and perpetuation. This presentation will run for one hour and be followed by a 30-minute Q&A.

Learning Objectives

  • Define orofacial pain and review its place in dentistry.
  • Discuss the limited role of occlusion in orofacial pain conditions.
  • Review alternative mechanisms underlying orofacial pain conditions.
