Description
This webinar will provide dental professionals with the knowledge, skills and strategies to identify, screen for and intervene when a patient in their practice is experiencing domestic violence. After reviewing misconceptions around causes and risk factors for domestic violence, it will cover signs and symptoms of domestic violence, specifically nonfatal strangulation. The webinar will also cover best practices for protocols and techniques to screen for and intervene in domestic violence situations.
Learning Objectives
- Describe misconceptions about the nature of and risk factors for domestic violence.
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of domestic violence in general and nonfatal strangulation in particular.
- Create effective screening protocols and a safe environment for patients to disclose domestic violence victimization.
- Identify appropriate ways to intervene when patients disclose they are victims of domestic violence.
Wendy Regoeczi, PhD, MPH, is a professor and chair of the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of South Carolina. Her research and teaching focus on violent crime, particularly domestic violence, intimate partner violence, sexual violence and violence prevention. Over the course of her 25-year career, she has conducted numerous trainings for practitioner audiences. Her research has been funded by the National Institute of Justice and the National Science Foundation. She is the author of the forthcoming book, “Domestic Violence: Examining the Facts.”
