On April 22nd Maine Governor Janet Mills signed legislation creating the Interstate Dentist and Dental Hygienist Compact. The Compact became active when the seventh state enacted the Compact language. Maine joined Washington, Iowa, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Virginia and Kansas as initial Compact states.

These seven states will appoint representatives to the Compact Commission who will create the Rules that will govern the process of awarding Compact privileges. It is expected that the first Compact privileges will be given out in the middle of 2025. Other states, such as Colorado and Oklahoma, are currently considering bills to join the Compact.

Impact on General Dentistry: AGD does not have a policy position on the Interstate Compact, but will monitor to see if the Compact is helping address workforce issues in the Compact states while not negatively affecting state dental boards.
