On September 22, 2026, CMS announced the cancellation of 315,000 unauthorized enrollments on the Federal Marketplace covering over 760,000 individuals. CMS noted that the impacted individuals’ insurance coverage was terminated in August following an investigation into the enrollments. The agency estimates that it will recoup $2.2 billion in advance payments of income-based premium tax credits from the canceled enrollments. As part of the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud’s efforts, CMS has established a Federally-facilitated Exchange (FFE) anti-fraud coordination group that will meet regularly to coordinate enforcement and program integrity efforts in the FFE.

Impact on General Dentistry: The cancellation of fraudulent Marketplace enrollments may leave some affected individuals temporarily uninsured if they do not successfully re-enroll in coverage. At the same time, CMS has highlighted that increased oversight of enrollment and broker activities may reduce fraudulent coverage disruptions and support a more stable insurance environment for patients seeking oral health care services.
