To Treat or Not to Treat: Congenital Granular Cell Epulis

Congenital granular cell epulis (CGCE), also known as newborn epulis, is a rare benign tumor characterized by connective tissue proliferation. If the mass impedes the infant’s feeding or respiration, surgical excision is the treatment of choice. However, CGCE usually stabilizes, and clinical monitoring may be appropriate if function is not compromised. In “Minimal intervention approach for a lesion suggestive of congenital granular cell epulis: a case report,” Fitipaldi et al describe monitoring of a CGCE that resolved spontaneously within 9 months, thus avoiding the risks of surgery in an infant.
