On March 20, 2026, Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chair Andrew Ferguson issued a memorandum directing the FTC’s Bureau of Competition, Bureau of Consumer Protection, Bureau of Economics, Office of Policy Planning, and Office of Technology to form a Healthcare Task Force. Responsibilities of the Healthcare Task Force include: (1) leading targeted enforcement and advocacy initiatives focused on key priorities; (2) devising coordinated agencywide strategies on investigations; (3) taking a proactive and strategic approach to identifying amicus and statement of interest opportunities; and (4) identifying emerging issues and new priority areas for enforcement and advocacy. The Healthcare Task Force will also seek to expand its membership to include other federal agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Impact on General Dentistry: AGD has been advocating to key members of Congress for oversight into the lack of antitrust enforcement against the anti-competitive practices of the insurance industry since the enactment of the Competitive Health Insurance Reform Act of 2020 (CHIRA).  This Task Force may lead to increased enforcement activity in this important area.
