On December 1, 2025, President Trump signed the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Reauthorization Act of 2025 (H.R. 2483), into law. First enacted in 2018, the SUPPORT Act authorizes funding for community-based substance use disorder (SUD) prevention, treatment, and recovery programs. Many of these programs expired in September 2023, making congressional reauthorization essential to continuing their work.

The legislation includes language from the MATE Improvement Act, which formally designates AGD as an approved provider of the mandatory continuing education required for prescribers of certain controlled substances. This recognition represents a significant step in AGD’s ongoing efforts to contribute to safe, evidence-based prescribing practices through continuing education.

The bill passed the House of Representatives on June 4, 2025, by a vote of 366-57, and was approved by the Senate by unanimous consent on September 18, 2025.

Impact on General Dentistry: Amending the MATE Act to allow AGD to provide the mandatory CE for dentists to renew their DEA license has been a top priority for AGD for several years.  President Worob stated “Including AGD as an authorized CE provider recognizes the important role that general dentists play in identifying and responding to substance-use and opioid-related risks. This will enable our members to meet DEA requirements efficiently while also supporting our broader mission to integrate oral health care into comprehensive, patient-centered substance-use and behavioral-health strategies.”
