The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) published the results of a December 2018 roundtable titled Integrating Oral and General Health through Health Literacy Practices. The 122-page document is broken into 7 chapters covering everything from health literacy as a catalyst and the development of a research agenda to advance integration to reflections on the workshop.

Over 40 health professionals including dentists, nurses, policy experts, educators, social workers, dental hygienists, and industry leaders participated in the roundtable to discuss ways in which health literacy can be used to integrate oral and general health care with the ultimate goal of improving overall care for patients.

Impact on General Dentistry: The AGD commends the National Academies and the members of the Roundtable of Health Literacy for their research into using health literacy as a catalyst for bringing about improved oral and general health integration. The AGD has put forth and is working to advance legislative proposals that would increase funding for oral health literacy.
