The Academy of General Dentistry has added its voice to a coalition of more than 80 health, medical and civil rights organizations formally urging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reconsider its proposed guidance on flavored electronic nicotine delivery systems. Filed May 11, the coalition's comments challenge the FDA's plan to treat certain flavors, including menthol and mint, as "lower risk" to youth, which would create an easier pathway for manufacturers to gain marketing approval. The coalition cites compelling evidence that youth flavor preferences shift rapidly in response to regulatory changes, that menthol and mint carry documented health risks comparable to other flavors and that the scientific evidence for flavor-driven smoking cessation benefits remains inconclusive. AGD strongly supports maintaining rigorous evidentiary standards for all non-tobacco flavored e-cigarettes.
