Finding Dangerous Mucosa: Identifying Potentially Premalignant and Malignant Lesions

Description

This course will look at a variety of clinical presentations of potentially premalignant and malignant lesions. Participants will learn how to clinically assess them and determine the appropriate technique to obtain a diagnostic biopsy. The course will highlight strategies that will minimize clinical diagnostic pitfalls.

Learning Objectives 

  • Learn the definition of leukoplakia.
  • Learn the definition of erythroplakia.
  • Learn the clinical characteristics of potentially premalignant and malignant lesions.
  • Learn clinically ominous signs that should prompt biopsy.

Speaker Bio  

Tanya Marie Gibson, DDS, is an associate professor with tenure in the Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine at the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry. She graduated from Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry in 2001 and completed her residency in oral and maxillofacial pathology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in 2004. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and a fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.
