Nearly every week, the mainstream media has articles that discuss the connection between oral health and overall health. Patients and dentists alike are confused about what is fact and what is speculation. A review of evidence-based methodology and how to critically evaluate the literature will be discussed. This course will present the latest evidence supported by credible scientific studies to help dentists understand how oral health impacts general health and how systemic medical conditions impact oral health. An overview of the interrelationship between periodontal disease and COVID-19, diabetes, cardiovascular health, stroke, cancer, pregnancy, respiratory diseases, rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease will be discussed.
Learning Objectives
- To be able to critically appraise medical and dental literature to better understand evidence-based medicine and dentistry.
- To understand what systemic medical conditions impact periodontal and oral health.
- To understand how periodontal disease and inflammation affect systemic medical conditions.
- To be able to use this knowledge to incorporate into your clinical care of patients to help improve their oral and overall health.
Speaker Bio
Thomas M. Paumier, DDS, is a cum laude graduate of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry class of 1987 and completed a general practice residency (GPR) at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Youngstown, Ohio. He has been in private practice in Canton, Ohio, since 1988. He is on the faculty of the Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital GPR in Canton and is a fellow in the International and American College of Dentists. He was a member of the American Dental Association (ADA) and American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons expert panels who wrote the Clinical Practice Guidelines and Appropriate Use Criteria for Antibiotic Prophylaxis for Prosthetic Joint Patients. He also was a co-author of the ADA Clinical Practice Guideline for Appropriate Antibiotic Use for Odontogenic Infections and was the 2019 recipient of the ADA Evidence-Based Dentistry Clinical Practice Award. He was one of six dentists appointed to the ADA Dental Practice Recovery Task Force during the COVID-19 pandemic. He regularly lectures to dental residents and students at the Case Western Reserve University Case School of Dental Medicine and New York University Langone Medical Center. He is vice-chair of the Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital Board and chairman of the Cleveland Clinic Mercy Development Foundation. He is a past president of the Ohio Dental Association and the Stark County Dental Society.
