Today, restorative dentists are overwhelmed with the number of different restorative dental ceramic materials available, which makes material selection complicated. The dental clinician often faces questions and decisions when choosing the appropriate type of ceramic material in different clinical situations. Moreover, the longevity and success of ceramic restorations are influenced by proper material selection and restoration design by the dentist. While metal-ceramic restorations are still a major treatment modality, replacing metal-ceramic systems with all-ceramic systems is possible. This presentation will help simplify the confusion in dental ceramic material selection. Additionally, a systematic solution and a decision-making guide will be provided, helping dentists choose the best material in different clinical cases. A brief overview of the related dental material science will be presented, and the microstructure, properties and clinical applications of each ceramic material will be discussed in different clinical scenarios.

Alireza Moshaverinia, DDS, MS, PhD, FACP, is a diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a tenured associate professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Dentistry, Division of Advanced Prosthodontics. Moshaverinia received his DDS in 2004 from Iran. He has a Master of Science in dental biomaterials from the Ohio State University College of Dentistry (2009). He completed advanced clinical education in prosthodontics and earned his PhD in craniofacial biology from the University of Southern California Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry (2012). He has published more than 80 papers in peer-reviewed journals on dental materials, implant dentistry and stem cell-mediated tissue engineering. He serves as the editorial review board member for several scientific journals, such as the Journal of Prosthodontics and Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. Moshaverinia is the recipient of several awards, including: the John Sharry Award (2012) and GSK Prosthodontist Innovator Award (2013 and 2016) from the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Career Development Award (2014), International Association for Dental Research (IADR) Innovation in Oral Care Award (2015), IADR Academy of Osseointegration (AO) Innovation in Implant Sciences Award, AO Research Grant Award (2016), and Peter Geistlich Research Award (Osteo Science Foundation) (2018). Moshaverinia also received the Discovery Inception Award from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. More recently, he received the prestigious IADR Young Investigator Award and the ACP Distinguished Researcher Award (2019). Moshaverinia directs the Laboratory for Biomaterials Innovation & Tissue Engineering (BITE) at the Weintraub Center for Reconstructive Biotechnology, UCLA School of Dentistry. His NIH-funded research projects focus on the development of novel biomaterials and the role of biomaterials in the cross talk between stem cells and the host immune system in stem cell-mediated tissue engineering. Moshaverinia lectures nationally and internationally on various topics such as dental ceramics, implant dentistry and multidisciplinary treatment planning.
