COORDINATOR, GOVERNMENT RELATIONS
Under the direction of the Manager, Government Relations, the Coordinator, Government Relations will monitor, track and analyze legislative and regulatory activities affecting general dentists, and summarize and communicate prominent activity to organization members. The Coordinator will work with AGD leaders at the state-level to assess issues, determine the need for advocacy efforts and implement accordingly. The Coordinator will draft and send advocacy communications to AGD members, state dental boards and elected officials on issues affecting general dentists and the profession as a whole. Additionally, this role will provide support to the Legislative and Governmental Affairs Council and assist with organizational activities and special projects as directed.
Essential Job Functions: (duties may not be ranked by order of importance)
- Identify and monitor state legislative and regulatory activity related to oral health care and general dentistry using AGD tracking software and other sources as needed.
- Define any potential impact of pertinent activity to AGD members, and communicate issues of importance to AGD’s constituent leaders.
- Assist constituent leaders in implementing grassroots and advocacy initiatives such as building action alerts, writing testimony or other position letters, composing and sending e-blasts to members on specific issues and other activities as deemed necessary.
- Write regular communications regarding AGD state advocacy activity for the bi-weekly AGD Advocacy newsletter, Capitol Connections, and other AGD communications vehicles; work with Manager of Government Relations and Communications department to ensure that members and non-members are informed of AGD’s government relations efforts.
- Oversee the AGD Advocacy Fund, providing regular reports as directed.
- Assist with logistics and planning for annual Capitol Hill fly-in event, annual Advocacy Conference and other department events.
- Send reminders to constituent leaders of upcoming State Dental Board meetings.
- As needed or directed, work with the Legislative and Governmental Affairs Council members to provide staff support and help to implement their programs and goals.
Minimum Qualifications for Consideration:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Communications or related field
Credentials (years of experience): Minimum one to three years of professional experience in government relations, professional relations, advocacy, or legislative or executive branch staff. Association experience, particularly in a dental organization, preferred; medical or other healthcare professional society desirable. Will consider new college graduates who possess excellent academic credentials and internship experience in lieu of professional experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Understanding of political and legislative processes.
- Excellent communications skills: ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with AGD members, leaders, officers and staff while offering superior customer service and presenting a positive image of AGD.
- Strong writing ability with good spelling, proofreading and grammatical skills, and excellent internet research skills.
- Ability to problem solve and think critically.
- Flexible, adaptable, able to work on a wide variety of tasks independently and in a team structure, and able to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to meet deadlines, maintain organization and punctuality, set priorities and demonstrate a high degree of attention to detail.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability and willingness to learn new software and programs as required; experience with legislative and regulatory tracking software as well as iMIS is desirable.
