General Dentistry—Circulation and Demographics

General Dentistry, the premier peer-reviewed journal from the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), presents the latest advances in science, pharmacology, dental materials, and technology, and the Self-Instruction (formerly DART) program for continuing dental education.

Circulation

AGD members ...................................................................................35,008
Additional paid subscribers
(General dentists, medical and dental libraries)....................................... 2,118
Circulation verification is available through sworn statement and postal service mailing statement.

Demographics

General Dentistry readers are prime purchasers of dental equipment, products, and services. Respondents in the most recent survey of readers represent the following demographics:

  • 84 percent have been practicing dentistry a median of 18 years.
  • 54 percent are in solo private practice; 25 percent are in group practice with two to three dentists.
  • On average, the total number of people employed in their offices is 11; three are dentists.
  • They have busy practices, treating a median of 89 patients per week.
  • Median gross practice income is $638,461; it’s higher at $729,687 for the under age 36 group.
  • 40 percent access the Internet at least once a day.
Readership

By joining the AGD, members have identified the importance of advanced education for their practice. General Dentistry is their primary member benefit and educational tool. The clinical and scientific articles help advance the profession, and practicing dentists, academicians, and research specialists gain tremendous prestige when their articles are accepted for publication.
The bi-monthly peer-reviewed journal has earned tremendous reader satisfaction and loyalty:

  • Importance: 80 percent of members consider the journal a “must read” to keep them informed.
  • Immediacy: Readers spend a median of 47 minutes with each issue and read at least half of each issue.
  • Usefulness: 67 percent apply the information in the journal to their practice.

Advertiser ROI is just as substantial: One-third of journal respondents actually have purchased an advertised product or service as a result of reading an ad in General Dentistry, 30 percent have saved ads for future reference, and 28 percent have visited advertisers’ Web sites.

Editorial Calendar 2007

General Dentistry is the premier bimonthly, peer-reviewed journal spotlighting the latest advances in science, pharmacology, dental materials, and technology, and the Self-Instruction (formerly DART) program for continuing dental education. The journal serves as the primary education and reference tool for Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) members who seek greater knowledge and information about changing procedures and techniques in practical, clinical dentistry.
General Dentistry presents research and clinical findings in a manner that busy practitioners can understand and helps the reader put that research or technique into everyday practice. Techniques and treatment-planning details are balanced by scientific protocol and industry benchmarks. And all the articles are vetted through the respected process of peer review.

In Every Issue

Articles strive to cover the full range of procedures that general dentists perform on an everyday basis, including:

  • Anesthesia/pain control
  • Dental materials
  • Endodontics
  • Esthetics
  • Implants
  • Infection control
  • Occlusion
  • Oral diagnosis
  • Pediatrics
  • Periodontics
  • Pharmacology
  • Removable prosthodontics
  • Restorative dentistry
  • Special patient care
Columns
  • Pharmacology Today (every issue)—Dr. Richard Wynn (Professor of Pharmacology, University of Maryland at Baltimore) informs readers about the most recent pharmacological trends and events relevant to dentistry.
  • Restorative Dentistry (every issue)—Dr. Bruce Small (president of The Institute of New Techniques in Dentistry, an independent teaching facility in Lawrenceville, N.J.) helps general dentists make more informed decisions regarding restorative dental materials and procedures.
  • Dental Materials (every other issue)—Dr. Michael Miller (president of REALITY Publishing Company and editor-in-chief of its publications, and in general practice in Houston, Texas) updates readers on selected “hot” topics in dental materials and offers advice on whether or not these new advances will benefit dental practices in a profound way.
Self-Instruction

One of the most important features in General Dentistry, Self-Instruction (formerly DART) allows readers to earn continuing education (CE) credits six times a year. Each issue features three exercises, each worth two CE credits. AGD members and readers use these credits toward relicensure, AGD membership maintenance, and the FAGD award. Exercises are available for up to a year after publication—greatly extending the publication’s shelf life. On average, more than 900 General Dentistry readers participate in Self-Instruction every issue.

The AGD Difference

The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) supports and advances the value and excellence of general dentistry through extensive education, supporting activities, news and peer-reviewed publications, and active membership.
By joining the AGD, 35,000 general dentistry practitioners have made a serious commitment to provide quality care through continuing education and professional development. In everything they do, these recognized leaders epitomize “excellence in dentistry.”

The AGD is harnessing the power of its membership to:
  1. Attract and embrace the entire general dentistry community dedicated to excellence.
  2. Promote greater public awareness of the excellence of its membership, and the best, most trustworthy information regarding overall oral health.
AGD Members Are on the Cutting Edge

AGD members are committed to advanced education and embrace the cutting edge of new technology. That makes them prime purchasers of high quality dental equipment, products, and services.

AGD Members Continue Their Professional Education

Only AGD members can achieve the prestigious AGD Fellowship (FAGD) and AGD Mastership (MAGD) awards. The Fellowship honors members who have earned more than 500 FAGD-approved CE credits and successfully completed the FAGD exam. The Mastership—the highest AGD distinction in continuing education— honors members who have completed 600 hours of challenging study in 16 dental disciplines.

AGD Members Further Their Lifelong Learning and Service

Only Masters of the AGD qualify for the prestigious Lifelong Learning and Service Recognition, which honors members who continue to volunteer professional services, act as leaders in the dental community, and further their education.

AGD Members Seek Career Advancement

AGD members who have earned their Mastership or completed a general practice residency can become board certified in general dentistry (ABGD certification), which promotes advancement in academic or hospital positions and military promotions.

The AGD Publications

With quality as their bottom line, AGD members embrace the ongoing value of General Dentistry, the premier, peer-reviewed journal of the AGD. With its spotlight on the latest advances in science, pharmacology, dental materials, and technology, and the Dental Article Review and Testing (DART) program for continuing dental education, no other dental journal ranks higher in readership studies year after year.
AGD Impact is the hard-hitting newsmagazine that AGD members read to stay ahead of trends, improve their delivery of quality dentistry, manage their practices, and learn about the latest in products and technology. Highly valued, widely read and enormously respected, AGD Impact is the award-winning publication that the leaders in general dentistry read today and everyone talks about tomorrow.
If you want your quality products noticed and purchased, you’ll advertise in the publications that educated dentists read—AGD Impact and General Dentistry.

AGD Advertorial Opportunities

Let the experienced editorial staff of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) present your company’s services and products in a way that general dentistry practitioners will appreciate.
AGD members are “the best educated dentists in the world, delivering the best quality dentistry using the best products and technology.” AGD members also are very busy growing their practices, managing their staff, and staying up-to-date on new developments in dental procedures, equipment, and technology.
In many cases, AGD advertorials can be more effective than display advertising—especially when the advertorials are placed within issues that contain articles and peer-reviewed papers covering the products and services your company offers.
The advertorials are written by your public relations and marketing staff. The layouts are professionally executed by AGD staff and will garner much attention.
In order to ensure that your staff has sufficient time to approve final copy and layout, add two months to the magazine’s published material deadline.
