Volunteer Opportunities

Call for Volunteer Leaders
Thank you for your interest in the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) Call for Volunteers. The following list briefly explains the different types of volunteer leadership from council and committee members to public information officers. The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) needs your leadership skills.

Annual Meetings

Assist in the selection of annual meeting education courses and speakers, as well as provide dental meeting scouting.

Budget and Finance

Oversee and monitor the AGD’s budget and/or assist your constituent with the budgeting process.

Communications

Provide direction on content and delivery mechanisms for member communications. Develop and implement programs that raise public awareness of the AGD, its members, and general dentistry. Contribute content and technology ideas for the AGD’s publications and social media. Address and oversee website development and content. Contribute technology ideas for more seamless communications between AGD Headquarters, AGD members and leaders, nonmember dentists, and the public.

Constitution, Bylaws & Judicial Affairs

Study and make recommendations to both the Board and the House of Delegates on any proposed change in the Constitution bylaws.

Dental Education

Oversee the Fellowship and Mastership award programs and recommend and evaluate quality continuing education opportunities.

Dental Practice

Monitor all aspects of dental practice, make recommendations for policy development, and advocate for members before third-party payers and insurance companies.

Examinations

Review and update the Fellowship Study Guide on an annual basis. Members will review the content outline bi-annually for the Fellowship exam and recommend changes in the outline to the Fellowship exam. Ensure that each new item submitted for inclusion in the item bank is relevant to and consistently categorized in accordance with the examination content outline. Members hold Fellowship or Mastership status within the AGD and have served a minimum of two years on the Fellowship Exam Committees (Team A or B) to be placed on the Item Bank Committee.

Develop and score the Fellowship exam annually. In developing the examination, you will ensure that the references accompanying each item of the examination are current and that the exam items adequately represent the Fellowship content outline. Additionally, an adequate pool of items that can be utilized for the Fellowship exam or Study Guide must be maintained. Members hold Fellowship or Mastership status within the AGD to be placed on this committee.

Governance/Credentials and Elections

Research and review evidence of a delegate’s eligibility based on both the constituent and AGD Headquarters qualifications. This position will serve as the tellers for elections in the House of Delegates.

Group Benefits

Review the “AGD Benefits Plus Program” providers and non-dues revenue generation, and recommend changes to the Board.

Legislative & Governmental Affairs

Lobby legislators and regulatory agencies on AGD policy positions.

Membership

Advise the AGD staff on recruitment and retention strategies for the AGD.

Program Approval for Continuing Education (PACE)

Evaluate the educational processes used in designing, planning, and implementing continuing education.

Self-Instruction

Develop continuing education opportunities through the AGD’s clinical, peer-reviewed journal, General Dentistry.

Legislative and Governmental Affairs

Write letters and make phone calls to your state legislator and/or federal legislators on behalf of the AGD, its members and general dentistry.

AGD Spokesperson

Represent the AGD in the media at a national level as an expert on a variety of oral health topics.

Author

Write articles for the AGD publications.

Constituent Speaker/Spokesperson

Represent the AGD at various presentations (schools, health fairs, etc.) or at media interviews as an expert on a variety of oral health topics. (For a comprehensive list of topics for which speakers are needed, please visit “Consumer Oral Health Topics” at www.agd.org.)

Member of a Scientific Review Panel

Research and develop questions for the AGD Fellowship Exam.

Public Information Officer

Serve as a vital communications link between the AGD and the general public.

Reviewer for AGD Publications

Review manuscripts (from five to 20 pages) from the AGD’s clinical, peer-reviewed journal, General Dentistry. Fields of interest include infection control, restorative dentistry, anesthesia and pain control, laser therapy, prosthodontics (fixed and removable), esthetics, and dental materials.

Serve as a Scout for Other CDE Meetings

Provide a scouting report from other continuing dental education (CDE) meetings that you attend. (Attendance is self-funded.)

Liaison to Other Dental Organization(s)

Liaise between the AGD and the dental organization(s) of your choice.

An AGD volunteer should:
  • Be an AGD member in good standing.
  • Attend and fully participate in all scheduled volunteer meetings and/or events.
  • Be able to provide the requisite skills required by the position.
  • Be open and willing to learn from your fellow volunteers.
An effective AGD volunteer is:
  • Knowledgeable in the area for which he/she is volunteering. (You don't need to be an expert, but an understanding of the topic is very helpful.)
  • Familiar with the AGD's core purpose and strategic goals.
  • Open to new ideas and ready to share experiences.
  • Highly energetic and committed to the volunteer experience.
