AGD Transcript News

The AGDTranscript is a quarterly e-newsletter sent to each state dental board in an effort to facilitate greater awareness of dental trends and issues across the nation. As the Academy of General Dentistry worked with Licensing dental boards toward acceptance of the AGD state transcript, it was noticed that happenings in one state were not always publicized to other states. Through this newsletter, the AGD hopes to build a lasting relationship with state licensing agencies while communicating information of interest.

On Oct. 16, 2009, the New York Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with Oral Health America, Columbia University College of Dental Medicine (CUCDM) and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, hosted a symposium that brought together geriatric care leaders from the medical and dental communities. This symposium focused on oral health and the significant role it plays in the overall health of the older population. Dr. Stanley Markovits attended on behalf of the AGD.

Collaborative Health Care for Older Adults: A Symposium for Creating Dialogue between Medicine and Dentistry brought together scientists, clinicians, and health care leaders with an interest in geriatric medicine to address the health care issues unique to older Americans. The symposium created a forum for open dialogue, encouraging the exchange of knowledge and ideas, and served as an impetus for medical and dental health care professionals to collaborate on improving the health of the elderly. This symposium aimed to provide education that will enhance the quality of health care delivery, advance health care for the elderly, and improve patient outcomes.

Those who attended the course improved their understanding about the necessity of including oral health as part of routine health care, particularly in the elderly population, as well as their understanding of factors that constitute the oral-systemic link and its importance to older Americans. Participants discussed recent advances in the understanding of the oral cavity and their impact on systemic diseases and diagnostics as well as the social and physical limitations facing the elderly community so that participants could address these concerns within their individual practices.

Daniel Malamud, PhD, New York University College of Dentistry and New York University College of Medicine, spoke at this event, acknowledging that most molecules present in blood also can be detected by sampling the oral cavity, presenting an overview of the field of oral-based diagnostics, and focusing on the utility of these tests for the geriatric population. David J. Zegarelli, DDS, of CUCDM, and Jeremy J. Mao, DDS, PhD, of CUCDM, also spoke at the symposium.
