Description

The use of tobacco and nicotine products continues to create serious systemic and oral compromises to those addicted. This course will review the past, present and future of these products and discuss their impact on the oral and overall health of adults and children. It will review how the use of these products can compromise the success of any dental treatment and will make dental professionals feel more comfortable speaking to patients, families and friends who are nicotine-addicted. It will show how an organized dental team approach can guide these individuals to resources to help them break their addiction.

  • Learn about the evolution of tobacco and nicotine products, including e-cigarettes, JUULs and “heat-not-burn” devices.
  • Learn about tobacco products’ impact on oral and overall health. 
  • Understand the basics of nicotine addiction and cessation resources available to patients.

Speaker Bio
 
Nevin Zablotsky, DMD, received his dental and postgraduate degree in periodontology from the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He has lectured throughout the United States and internationally on tobacco-related issues, including for the American Dental Association (ADA) CELL Seminar Series, at the 2017 ADA annual meeting and at the Yankee Dental Conference twice, and he presently has two online courses for the Procter and Gamble Company. He recently authored a chapter on tobacco, oral health and tobacco cessation in the periodontal textbook “Non-Surgical Control of Periodontal Diseases” and has published numerous articles on tobacco and nicotine issues. He received the Vermont Advocate of the Year award from the American Cancer Society and the lifetime achievement award from the Vermont Special Olympics, and he is the past president of the Vermont Periodontal Society. He presently is a senior consultant and lecturer on tobacco curricula at the Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine.
