Dentists from across the great state of Texas united to celebrate their journey through dentistry, support fellow dentists affected by Hurricane Harvey, and to honor (13) Texas New Dentist of the Year nominees and (15) Texas Dentist of the Year™ nominees at the Texas Academy Awards. Special guest Dr. Maria Smith, AGD Immediate Past President, also installed the 2017-2018 Texas AGD Board of Directors.
For many years, Texas AGD local components and Texas dental societies have been joining together to celebrate dentistry and to honor hundreds of nominees for the Texas Dentist of the Year™ and the New Dentist of the Year. Together, these nominees and the winners are celebrated at the Texas Academy Awards.
- The New Dentist of the Year award started in 2009 to recognize emerging young leaders in the field of dentistry. Winners are recognized for their involvement in their dental school, contributions to dentistry, service to their communities and clear vision for the future of dentistry.
- Since 1965, the Texas AGD selects one dentist a year to honor as the Texas Dentist of the Year™, the highest honor a Texas dentist can receive. Winners have excelled in the field of dentistry and dedicate themselves to their communities through volunteer work for various causes.
In addition, the evening featured the “Glow for Good” campaign, which raised funds for Texas dentists affected by Hurricane Harvey. Texas AGD guests donated over $10,000 in one single night. With the Jack T. Clark Foundation matching the funds, the campaign raised a total of $20,000!
Dr. Jeff Geno, recently installed President of Texas AGD, summed up the evening by stating, “Texas AGD [is a] community of passionate general dentists that certainly understand how to partner together to assist one another in their journey. I am looking forward to serving as president to this extraordinary group of professionals.”
