Each issue of General Dentistry, the AGD's award-winning, peer-reviewed clinical journal, contains two or three articles about various topics in dentistry and related "open book" exercises. Once you enroll, you can earn continuing education (CE) credits in three easy steps:

1. Read the articles.
2. Take the exercises.
3. Submit your answers.

  5. If you enroll for 6 or 12 exercises, you will have 12 months from the date of enrollment to complete them. All unused exercises expire after 12 months.

  6. How many credits can I receive through Self-Instruction?
For each exercise that you pass, you earn two CE credits. In one year, you could earn up to 36 CE credits. These credits can be applied toward AGD membership maintenance or the AGD's Fellowship Award. All credits are PACE- and CERP-approved and count toward state licensure where self-instruction credits are permissible. Check with your state board for licensure requirements in your area.

  7. How do I submit my answers?
Please follow the simple guidelines listed below for the program:

    • Please keep a copy of your answer forms for your records.
    • Credits are entered directly into your transcript—so you will not receive separate notices of each exercise passed. If you do not pass an exercise, we will notify you by mail or e-mail.
    • Online submission of exercises is highly recommended.

You may submit exercises 1 of 4 ways:

    1. Web site: http://www.agd.org (Under Education and Self Instruction)
    2. E-mail: selfinstruction@agd.org.
      • The excercises MUST contain your Name, AGD number, Self-Instruction exercise number being submitted (#205).
      • Only one exercise should be submitted per e-mail.
      • Please write your answers vertically as such:
        1. A (enter)
        2. B (enter) and so forth.
      • Note: E-mail responses omitting any of this information will take longer to process.
    3. Via US postal mail to our address below.
    4. Via facsimile directly at 312.440.4261.

  8. How will I be notified if I pass or fail an exercise?
AGD members: Credits earned will be entered on your AGD transcript within two to three weeks of receipt of answers. You can check your transcripts online to track your progress. If you fail an exercise, you will receive a letter via regular mail.
Non-members: You will receive a printed notice of credits earned via regular mail.

  9. How often is General Dentistry published?
General Dentistry is published bimonthly, for a total of six issues per year.

  10. How are Self-Instruction exercises developed?
Self-Instruction exercises are developed by and for general dentists to ensure that you receive quality continuing education that benefits you, your patients, and your practice.
